week 2 - backward design
Understanding by Design by Grant Wiggins was very interesting and informative. Backward design teaches us a planning framework to enable our teaching to be more effective. We learn to be prepared for teachable moments since we always have our long term goals in mind.
We need to :1. Keep our long term goals in view
2. Blend content with student performance
3. Engage our learners
Our short term and long term goals need to be aligned. When creating weekly lesson plans, we need to target our end goal, otherwise, it will not happen on its own!
Letting our students be proactive in reaching their long term goals and assessing themselves goes a long way to building responsible motivated thoughtful students.
Text books are merely a RESOURCE. Textbooks do not know our goals or provide the means to get there. Our goal is not the content. The content in the text book is one of many resources in ensuring that our students will be able to apply meaning and transfer their knowledge to real life. We need to continuously expand our student's thinking and motivate them through every lesson, course, and idea.
If we constantly keep our eye on this end goal, our lessons will be rich, rewarding motivating and have long lasting impact.
